– Katsina State Government has destroyed 416 illegal arms in the state
– The government says they are doing this in a bid to reduce the rate of crime in the state
The Katsina state government has recovered and publicly destroyed 416 arms which were taken from illegal owners in Katsina State. The recovered arms were destroyed publicly on Tuesday.
The exercise is aimed at recovering illegal arms in the state and establishing a check to the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW).
Aminu Masari, the state Governor who was represented at the commencement of the exercise by Inuwa Mohammed who is the Secretary to the State Government, said that the programme had recorded an unprecedented success as seen in the voluntary surrender of illicit arms by repentant criminals in the state.
He also added that the programme had been a strategy aimed at reducing crime in the state, stressing that kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and other crimes and vices which plagued the state, were on the decline.
According to him, the programme is in partnership with the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons/ECOWAS-EU small arms project.
The governor of the state further said, “we have been informed that this partnership will provide micro projects in selected communities and individuals who have keyed in; we are ready to make available the communities and people involved to benefit.”
